Ivan Paduart Quartet featuring Rick Margitza

Rick Margitza: tenor sax, Ivan Paduart: piano, Stephan Kurmann: bass, Dejan Terzic: drums

A wonderful, lyric-emphasized joining of two strong soloists who make hay while the sun shines and make the best use of their individual musical complexity.
The Belgian pianist has developed his stylistic spectrum to a wider range over the last years by collaborating with several jazz stars. Nevertheless, he still comes across as the expert for lyrical and melodic acoustic jazz. Most of the self-composed pieces are characterized by elegant, dreamy elements, peaceful in themselves. There is also room for the energy-loaded, powerful momentum and beautiful tension. Rick Margitza (New York), was born into a family of musicians over three generations, and is a stupendous expert, who has worked together with stars such as Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea. Ivan Paduart’s consistent, supporting play is ideally combined with his sensitive, flowing and inspired acting on the sax.

Scherrer-Evans-Kurmann-Rossy

Andy Scherrer: tenor sax, William Evans: piano, Stephan Kurmann: bass, Jorge Rossy: drums

One of the most exciting aspects of Jazz are groups which are set up just for one moment as is the case in this evening.
The fascination and challenge of such concerts is for the musicians to create a special mood which captivates the audience. They also give jazz an important part of its energy to reinvent itself with vitality and tension. When four great, mature and high class musical personalities come together as an ad-hoc preferred group the audience sees and hears what is truly possible.

The music of this quartet is dedicated to the longing (saudade) for Brazil’s joy of life. Especially to Bossanova.
Though there style is rooted in Brazilian Jazz, it has been further developed in other countries by non-Brazilian composers for a long time. It is now supported by a worldwide tradition. This is evident, when Thomas Dobler and his co-musicians interprete pieces not only by Antonio Carlos Jobim (the grandfather of Bossa) and other Brazilian composers, but also the wonderful oeuvres by the US American Burt Bacharach and further “Bossanovists”. Bossa is always a beautiful world of music, wherever it is composed, whenever played.

Both have made their own way in terms of specific, characteristic sound and have proved themselves as mature and expressive personalities. Cojazz invites Lisette Spinnler and Felix Borel

Lisette Spinnler: vocals, Felix Borel: violin/Trichtergeige, Andy Scherrer: piano, Stephan Kurmann: bass, Peter Schmidlin: drums

Another highlight of the series “Cojazz invites” with promising guests. Part of the latter are not only a breathtaking voice, but also a rarely heard funnel violin.
This instrument, also called straw violin, is played with a bow, but the vibrations of the strings are not transmitted through a Resonator, but directly to a membrane. The vibrations of the air are amplified by a metallic funnel. The virtuous violonist Felix Borel, who also participates together with Andy Scherrer and Stephan Kurmann at the “Stephan Kurmann Strings”, plays this extraordinary instrument here at the Bird’s Eye as an experiment for the first time. We will certainly enjoy an entertaining premiere, played on a historic instrument, provided by the manufacturer of violins, Michael Baumgartner, to whom we are very grateful. Additionally, this per se furious and talented trio is supplemented by huge talent and almost unlimitedly changeable, wonderful voice of Lisette Spinnler. The voice actually comes out of the mother of all sound-producing funnels, so to speak, and therefore fits perfectly to the motto “funneling”.

Cecilia Colombo Quarteto – Afrosambas

Cecilia Colombo: vocals, Aliéksey Vianna: acoustic guitar, Stephan Kurmann: bass, Fabio Freire: percussion

This Brazilian singer has an education in the art of classic singing and is also very active in this domain. Nevertheless, she equally likes to sing the music her homeland.
Thereby she captivates the audience with her soft, smooth voice, that masters every high and low with ease. She opens the musical horizon in her own, special and esthethic way with her program of rarely heard afro-sambas by Baden Powell and Vinícius de Moraes as well as other, better known pieces. The internationally renowned classic guitarist Aliéksey Vianna has a similar background, he also loves and lives the Brazilian music tradition. The roots of the percussionist Fabio Freire from Sao Paulo are in Candomblé and therefore in Africa. This extraordinary quartet makes the audience enjoy themselves with their expertise and enthusiasm.

Nat Su: altosax, Roberto Tarenzi: piano, Stephan Kurmann: bass, Norbert Pfammatter: drums

The altosax is a rather small funnel – but with huge impact, when played by Nat Su, whose trade mark has always been intelligent and breathtakingly-beautiful jazz.
Nat Su has always been a sensible, inspired and emotionally strong saxophonist and composer, and he has found an even more characteristic and enchanting language in the recent years, which is expressed powerfully and cleary defined in his newer compositions. His play and his pieces have increased in appeal, they breath his pronounced sense for esthethics and his ability of internalization of his statements even stronger than before. He has found ideal co-musicians on his musical way with the virtuous pianist from Milan, Roberto Tarenzi and Stephan Kurmann and Norbert Pfammatter as furious rhythm group.

He presents himself with great routine, as an expert of the lyric, melodic acoustic jazz. The pieces, most their own own compositions, are shaped by elegant, dreaming and peaceful elements, with additional energy, powerful momentum and tension.
